According to their own mythology, the Hopis have been here forever; according to anthropological research, they have lived here for at least 700 years. The Navajos, according to anthropological lore, are relatively recent arrivals on the North American continent (like the rest of us). They came roving down from the north in small, nomadic bands, a hunting, gathering and raiding society, and arrived in what is now Arizona about 500 years ago, not long before the Spanish.
