I would imagine he was required to travel though the colonies. He used his talents as an artist to record his travels. This volume contains a number of foldout reproductions of his artwork including a map of the St. Lawrence River which here appears after the Preface instead at the back in the original publication circa 1808. A large section of the book is devoted to The Manners and Customs of the American Indians with an appendix of words from the Algonquin tongue with English meanings.
