Title: Methods and Results, an Attempt to Solve the Problem of the First Landing Place of Columbus in the New World United States Coast and Geodetic Survey Appendix No. 18
Description: Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1882. First Edition. Hardcover. Boards show light shelf wear, with light fraying to extremities. There are a number of what appear to be corrections scattered throughout the text in pen, unsure if these are done by the author or another party. ; A tight solid book, hinges intact. Brown cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles on front boards. Pasted onto the front pastedown appears to be the personal card of the author, imprinted with the words "With the Compliments of G.V. Fox". Handwritten in ink on the top of the card is "Señor Don Luis L. Dominguez, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary from the Argentine Republic" And at the bottom is written "Washington D.C. U.S. of America". Dominguez was the Ambassador from Argentina at this time. Tipped onto the blank page facing the title page is a piece of notepaper with the Department of State letterhead. Handwritten on the notepaper is the following "June 9,1883. Señor Don Luis L. Dominguez - My Dear Sir. Permit me to offer for your acceptance, on the part of Captain G. V. Fox, a copy of his monograph concerning the Landfall of Columbus. Believe me, Yours very sincerely, Theodore J. Dwight". Tucked into an enclosure created on inner back board is a large NF map titled "Chart of Part of Bahama Islands Showing the Tracks Ascribed to Columbus on his Discovery of the New World" with five good sized inserts of individual islands. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 68 pages; "Gustavus Vasa Fox (June 13, 1821 – October 29, 1883) was an officer of the United States Navy, who served during the Mexican–American War, and as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. In 1882 he published a paper suggesting that Samana Cay in the Bahamas was Guanahani, or San Salvador, the first island Christopher Columbus reached in his discovery of the Americas. Little attention was paid to his paper until 1986, when the National Geographic Society also concluded that Samana Cay was San Salvador." (Wikipedia). Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued .
