Duodecimo half calf gilt to spine with gilt title (tips sl.rubbed but a nice binding with marbled boards) xxiv (Titlepage, dedication & To reader) +iv (Apology) +347pp +[1]p booklist. Lacks the portrait (if called for) but has the Gypsy cant vocabulary at the end. One page torn without loss and 3 margins repaired also without loss, some foxing at begining & end and a few other signs of use but crisp and clean. *Variously ascribed to Thomas Price, Robert Goadby, Mrs Goadby and to Carew himself. Based on the anonymous 'Life and adventures of Bampfylde-Moore Carew' pub. in Exeter in 1745. Includes a dictionary of the Gypsy cant language (ESTC T110480). A fascinating life of deception quick wit, luck, and travel including fascinating account of Carew's travels in Maryland & Virginia.
