"At about 2:30 on an afternoon in July, at 20,475 feet, in a temperature of 15 degrees F. and amid a shower of volcanic ash, three mountaineers posed for a photograph in Ecuador. They were at the summit of Chimborazo, in the Andes. The year was 1880, the photographer - Edward Whymper.. the best known of the 19th century mountaineers." (from the dustjacket).
