"One of the better adjutant general's compilations; descriptive rosters are given for most units" (Nevins II, p. 152) An adjutant general officer is responsible for providing personnel support that affects Soldiers' overall welfare and well-being, while assisting commanders by accounting for and keeping Soldiers combat-ready.. During the American Civil War, the state of Illinois was a major source of troops for the Union Army (particularly for those armies serving in the Western Theater of the Civil War), and of military supplies, food, and clothing. Although there were no major Civil War battles fought in Illinois, that state, nonetheless had numerous prisons in Illinois housing Confederate soldiers. -- Alton, Illinois, at Springfield, at Rock Island, and most famously and notoriously, at Camp Douglas in Chicago.
