Description: New York, Harper & Brothers, 1868. REVISED EDITION. Hardcover. Large octavo, 6.25 in. x 9.5 in. xliv + p. 45 - 501 + 4 p. advertising. Maroon cloth beveled boards with embossed publisher's logo in blind, at center. Gilt lettering and image of early steam engine to spine. Contains preface for this 1868 revised edition, plus "Preface for the Eighth Edition, 1864". Illustrations by R.P Leitch, Percival Skelton, and others. Shelf-rubbing to top and bottom of spine and cornerswhich themselves are lightly bumped. Spine is tight. Bookplate (3" x 4") on front pastedown reads "Library of the Essex Institute". Embossed library stamp on frontispiece of George Stephenson reads "Essex Institute 1848". Owner's inscription, dated 1869, in ink on front flyleaf. This is the Revised edition of Smiles' 1857 book. George Stephenson was an British civil engineer and mechanical engineer. Known as the "Father of the Railways", Stephenson was considered by the Victorians to be a great example of diligent application and thirst for improvement. Self-help advocate Samuel Smiles particularly praised his achievements. Very Good .
