The Lady's Magazine was the most popular and longest running periodical for women in the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1770 to 1847, monthly issues featured articles on an array of topics, including fiction, poetry, fashion, music, foreign news, natural history, and social gossip. Issues from 1785, such as the present copy, included summaries from the extremely popular and much anticipated 1784 publication of Captain Cook's A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. This issue is an excellent example of how knowledge about distant locales was distilled and communicated to female audiences. As part of "arm chair travel" literature, the article details the manners, customs, and appearances of Pacific Islanders, often invoking the Enlightenment archetype of the "noble savage." This issue also includes, amongst other topics, articles on Orinthology, The Lady's Gardener's Calendar, Poetry, a Dissertation on Dogs, and select letters. GOOD PLUS .
