Marbled page edges all-round. Four raised bands, gilt ruling and decorations to spines, gilt-stamped titles over black cloth labels. Rubbing to extremities, to marbled page edges. Ex-libris bookplates and accession location stamps inside front flaps. Moderate foxing to folding maps, verso, scattered foxing thereafter, else quite bright and clean. Printed by R. Clay, Cheapside, London, for Frederick Wesley and A.H. Davis. Ten-panel Plan of the City (Rio de Janeiro) at Volume I frontis, with nine black-and-white lithographs. Sixteen-panel folding map at frontis of Volume II of the Provinces of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais and including the route the author took; 10 additional black-and-white lithographs. Volume I: xv [1] 1-528 pp.; Volume II: xii [1], 2-541 pp. with Appendixes of a musical score, lists of exports, civil lists, etc. An unusually staunch and informed plea for Abolition, based on first-hand observation of the depredations of slavery and human exploitation by slavers. The Irish Reverend R. Walsh (1772-1852) graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1796. He was ordained a clergyman of the Church of Ireland, married, became a father, served as Chaplain for the British Embassy in Russia and Constantinople and eventually in Rio de Janeiro in 1828. Walsh also published A Narrative of a Journey from Constantinople to England . An Essay on Ancient Coins, Medals, and Gems . Account of the Levant Company . and Letters Written From Greece and Constantinople . among many others. GOOD .
