Description: London, Printed for R.L. and M.P. and are to be sold by J. Starkey and M. Pitt at the Miter in Fleet Street, 1678. First Edition. Leather-bound. Folio, 13x8 inches. Professionally rebound in half leather with orange cloth over boards. Five raised bands, dark green leather spine label with titles and spine decorations in gilt. Binding tight. Part 1: [20], 264pp; Part 2: [2], 214pp (with misnumbered pages 58 as 56, 63 as 61); Parts 3 and 4: [6], 97, [8] 107-119 [3], these last being the publisher's list of books sold at the Angel in St. Paul's Churchyard. 23 full page engraved plates, including one folding (chart of diamonds), text engravings and vignettes. Note condition: The book was dampstained and expertly repaired. The first 38 pages and most of the last 35 pages are mounted, with much of the text showing lighter, but quite readable. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a 17th-century French gem merchant, who, self-financed, made six voyages to Persia and India between the years 1630 and 1668. His total "mileage" was said to be at least 120,000 miles. Very Good .
