Description: London, E.H. for Robert Boulter at the Turk's-head in Corn-hill, against the Royal-Exchange, 1683. Leather-bound. xvi, 204 [28] pp. 4to. Contemporary calf, rubbed. k1 (p65) torn. Rear free ep missing corner. Gilt spine,faded. Red title label. Binding solid. Leather peeling up from cardboard, exposing stitching, but solidly bound. Else very clean, copy. Owners signature dated April 1683. According to his grandson George Scott's Epistle to the Reader, the manuscript was found hidden in the Castle of Edinburgh in 1660. Melvil was a special emissary to reconcile Queen Elizabeth to Mary's marriage with Lord Darnley. He warned against the marriage to Bothwell and he states that Bothwell kidnapped and raped Mary to force the accomplishment of this marriage. Melvil later was a diplomat to James VI, but declined an offer to accompany him to London. No one was in a better position to know and understand the momentous events in Scotland.
