Title: The Memoires of Sir James Melvil of Hal-Hill Containing an Impartial Account of the Most Remarkable Affairs of State During the Last Age, Not Mention'd by Other Historians: More Particularly Relating to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, Under the Reigns of Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, and King James. Description: London, England, Printed by E(dward) H(orton) for Robert Boulter at the Turks-Head in Corn-Hill, against the Royal-Exchange, 1683. Leather-bound. Thin folio in contemporary mottled calf, rebacked with five raised bands, no lettering to new spine. Title hand-ruled in red (and printed in black). With the fine signature of Will Legge ((14 October 1672 - 15 December 1750) who was the first Earl of Dartmouth (1711), to front free endpaper, and the large signature "DARTMOUTH" to verso of title page. Very faint toning to some of the early gatherings, but the entire work is for the most part, printed on high quality laid bond, which has well-survived the ensuing three and one-half centuries. 204 pp. followed by a 25 page alphabetical"Table" which lays out the entire appearances of each of these "players" in the royal high court drama, citing all the pages where each appears. This section followed by "An Alphabetical Interpretation of all the Scottish Words and Phrases Contained in This History" (2 pp). The book concludes with a one-page "(A) Catalogue of some Books Printed for, and to be Sold by Robert Boulter at the Turk's-Head in Corn-Hill, 1683. Some titles include Sturmey's Magazine; Rea's Floria; Brown against Quakers; Looking-Glas for Children; Wars of Hungary; History of Jewels; Moral Gallantry, etc. According to his grandson George Scott's Epistle to the Reader, the manuscript was found hidden in the Castle of Edinburgh in 1660. Melvil was a special emissary to reconcile Queen Elizabeth to Mary's marriage with Lord Darnley. He warned against the marriage to Bothwell and he states that Bothwell kidnapped and raped Mary to force the accomplishment of this marriage. Melvil later was a diplomat to James VI, but declined an offer to accompany him to London. No one was in a better position to know and understand the momentous events in Scotland. Very Good .
