John Strachan (1846-1922) was a Scottish-born Australian shipmaster and explorer. As a reporter for "Age" newspaper in Sydney, he explored the Mai Kassa River in 1885 and continued further to the Gulf of Papua in 1886, where he claimed 500,000 acres of area he explored. His claim and later appeal to the courts was dismissed as "excitable and rather ignorant". After exploring McClure's Gulf in 1887 from a base in Cape York he published Explorations and Adventures in New Guinea in 1888, which was poorly received by geographers. Very Good .
