Thomas Lovell Beddoes (1803 - 1849) was something of an enigma. During his lifetime he only published two works -- The Improvisatore in 1821, and The Bride's Tragedy in 1822, leaving his entire remaining manuscripts to his devoted friend Thomas Forbes Kelsall, who unflaggingly attempted, with some success, to have his friends' works published. Robert Browning as well, as a considerable fan and promoter of Beddoes. Sir Edmund Gosse writes (see Introduction) .."He existed for forty-six years unconcealed, but unobserved. His name does not occur in the memoirs of the age he lived in, and if it had not been for the devoted attachmentof Thomas Forbes Kelsall -- himself not otherwise known to posterity -- the history of the poet of 'Death's Jest-Book' would be completely obscure.. Ill.: Hans Holbein. VERY GOOD .
