Collected Stories New York, US: Viking/Penguin, 2001. First. Hardback copy. 442pp. ISBN: 0670894869. Octavo. Paper-backed spine lettered in gilt. Introduction by James Wood."Elegantly expansive, replete yet plaintive, dense with concrete detail but peculiarly dizzying in their effects, (these) stories immediately announce themselves as far too weighty to submit to the label "short", and not merely because several of them are as long as novellas. Politics, history, metaphysics, the Holocaust, love, death, memory, consciousness, modernity, America, sex - how can such vast subjects find accommodation in a form more frequently associated with wry brevity and unanswered questions? One explanation may be that Bellow simply refuses to accept these limitations, or treats them as a necessity that must be made to yield virtue." Good copy with some corner edge wear & light rubbing to red page ridges, text clean, binding tight. 126 pp. "Saul Bellow (June 10, 1915 – April 5, 2005) was a Canadian-born American writer. For his literary contributions, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to have won the National Book Award three times, and the only writer to have been nominated for it six times. In the words of the Swedish Nobel Committee, his writing exhibited "exuberant ideas, flashing irony, hilarious comedy and burning compassion.. the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." His best-known works include The Adventures of Augie March, Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet, Seize the Day, Humboldt's Gift and Ravelstein. Widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest authors, Bellow has had a "huge literary influence." - Wikipedia. Book number: 1516223 USD 2.85 [Appr.: EURO 2 | £UK 1.75 | JP¥ 245] |

The Dean's December is a tale of two cities, Chicago, Illinois and Bucharest, Rumania, a tale of East and West. It is also the story of a double crisis in the life of Albert Corde. Corde, the Dean, is not a real academic, this is anything but a campus novel, but a newspaperman who returned to his hometown to be Professor of Journalism and, eventually, Dean of Students.
