The Universitas Project: Solutions for a Post-technological Society.
NY: The Museum Of Modern Art,
In January of 1972, The Museum of Modern Art hosted "The Universitas Project," a two-day conference sponsored by the Museumís International Council and the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies. The distinguished participants, from a wide range of scholarly and artistic disciplines, including Jean Baudrillard, Umberto Eco, Gyorgy Kepes, Octavio Paz, Anatol Rapoport, Meyer Schapiro, Carl Schorske and Jivan Tabibian, among many others, engaged in a multidisciplinary debate on the future of design and design institutions in the postindustrial era. The project, conceived and directed by the noted architect and designer Emilio Ambasz, then Curator of Design at the Museum, was originally described as "a critical and prospective inquiry into the relation of man to the natural and the sociocultural environment...specifically planned to explore the possibility of establishing in the United States a new type of institution centered around the task of evaluating and designing the man-made milieu." This important volume publishes in their entirety the various components of the conference: the working papers that set the terms of the debate; the essays submitted by the invitees; the proceedings of the symposia responding to the papers; and the postscripts provided by the participants after the event. It makes this chapter in the intellectual history of the Museum, addressing issues and ideas still relevant today, available for the first time to scholars, the architecture and design community and the general public. Paperback/Softcover. ISBN: 0870700707. Large octavo ( 24.7 x 16.7 cms 6.5 x 9.75 inches) 440 pages. A very fine copy - as new in heavy fold over wrappers. This book weighs 1.2 kilos (2.75 pounds).

INES DE LA CRUZ, SOR JUANA; PAZ, OCTAVIO (FOREWORD).
A Sor Juana Anthology.
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 1988. Softcover. Very good condition. Sor Kuana Ines de la Cruz was acclaimed in her time as Phoenix of Mexico, America's Tenth Muse; a generation later she was forgotten. In the twentieth century she was rediscovered, her words were reissued; she is now considered one of the finest Hispanic poets of the seventeenth century. She deserves to be known to English-speaking readers for another reson as well: she speaks directly to our concern for the freedom of women to realize themselves artistically and intellectually. This is a bi-lingual book in Spanish and English. Translated into English from the Spanish by Alan S. Trueblood. A selection of the Mexican nun's work in excellent versions by Alan Trueblood. It successfully reflects the versatility of Sor Juana, whose styles range from spirited popular lyrics, some incorporating snatches of Nahuatl or Afro-Spanish refrains, to the learned conceits of her full-blown Gongorist manner. - Edwin Willilamsoln, London Review of Books

Air Born/Hijos del Aire.
Mexico City: Pescador, 1979. First Edition. Poems co-written by the authors -- Paz the Mexican Nobel Prize winner and Tomlinson a British poet, translator and artist. Paz has translated Tomlinson's poetry into Spanish, and he provided the introduction for a 1976 book of his graphic art. This is the hardcover issue: of a total edition of 391 copies, this is a Roman-numeraled copy in cloth and boards, apparently one of 75 such copies (although the colophon is ambiguous on this matter) signed by both authors. Air Born/Hijos del Aire.
Mexico City: Pescador, 1979. First Edition. Poems co-written by the authors, printed in a total edition of 391 copies, this being one of the issue in wrappers. Not signed on the colophon, but inscribed by Paz to Roman Jakobson and his wife, Christine "with friendship and admiration." Jakobson is widely considered one of the greatest linguists and thinkers of the 20th century and his influence has been pervasive. A wonderful association between a Latin American Nobel Prize winner and one of the important intellectual figures of the century. Near fine.
